Rinnai Error 11 Diagnosed and Fixed with a Warranty Gas Valve

An Error 11 on a Rinnai tankless unit is one of the more common calls we get. It means the heater tried to ignite and failed. Simple enough on the surface - but tracking down the actual cause takes more than just reading the code.

We opened the unit up and got to work. First we checked the burner for any obvious issues. Then we tested gas pressure to rule that out. What we found was a failed gas valve. That's the component responsible for controlling gas flow into the burner, and when it goes, the unit won't fire no matter what else you do.

The good news - this Rinnai was still under warranty. We got the replacement gas valve ordered and had it in hand the very next day. Once the new valve was installed and everything was buttoned back up, the unit fired right up on the first try. Hot water restored.

This is exactly the kind of repair where experience matters. A lot of people see an error code and assume the worst - that the whole unit needs to go. But tankless water heaters are repairable, and when you know what you're looking at inside one of these units, you can usually fix the problem without replacing the whole system. Especially when warranty parts are still in play.

If your Rinnai is throwing an error code and you're not getting hot water, don't write the unit off yet. There's a good chance it's something specific and fixable - you just need someone who knows how to find it.
